Why I joined politics – Olumide Oworu

Actor Olumide Oworu has explained why he decided to enter Nigerian politics, saying the direction of the country and the quality of decision making influenced his move.

Olumide spoke in an interview on Naija FM about how governance affects everyday life. He said he wants to be part of those shaping policies because those decisions will impact his generation.

He said, “I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here. So, I have to make sure I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy is enacted will ultimately affect me like every other common person. And also, most of the present crop of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow.”

The 31-year-old ran for the Lagos State House of Assembly to represent Surulere Constituency 1 under the Labour Party in the 2023 elections. He lost the contest to his colleague, actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliott.

Born in 1994, Olumide began acting as a child and is known for roles in series such as The Johnsons. He studied mass communication at Babcock University and has also worked as a rapper and model.

Despite the election loss, he has maintained his interest in public service and continues to advocate greater youth participation in governance.
