Why I don’t like fans calling my daughter ‘Duduke’ – Simi

Singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has appealed to fans to stop referring to her daughter Adejare as “Duduke.”

Simi made the appeal during a chat with media personality VJ Adams, where she expressed discomfort over the nickname fans have associated with her child since 2020.

The name “Duduke” became popular after the singer released a hit single of the same title in April 2020 while pregnant with her first child.

The emotional love song quickly resonated with listeners and became the unofficial soundtrack of pregnancy announcements across Nigeria.

After she and her husband, fellow singer Adekunle Gold, welcomed their daughter Adejare in June 2020, fans began fondly nicknaming the child “Duduke” — a move Simi says she doesn’t appreciate.

“People call my daughter Duduke, which I don’t like. That’s not her name. It doesn’t even mean anything. Had it meant something good, I would have allowed it. But it’s just a beat — duduke, duduke. That was what I meant. My heart beats like a drum,” she said.

Simi explained that the word “Duduke” was simply an onomatopoeic expression used in the song to represent the rhythm of her heartbeat and her emotional anticipation of meeting her baby.

“Stop calling my child Duduke [laughs]. But you know what? I get it, it’s coming from a good place, so I try not to react,” she added.

Simi and Adekunle Gold, who tied the knot in a private ceremony in January 2019, have occasionally shared glimpses of their daughter on social media, though they remain protective of her identity.

Last week Friday the duo celebrated their daughter’s fifth birthday, sharing moments of the family on their social media pages.

The couple’s musical collaboration and chemistry have endeared them to fans.
