Singer Oludipe David, better known as Spyro, has explained why he picked Tiwa Savage to feature on the remix of his hit song ‘Who Is Your Guy’, instead of other big names like Olamide and Asake.
In an interview with NigerianTribuneTV’s Celebrity Chit-Chat, set to air on Monday, Spyro said the idea for a remix came from conversations with his team about how to expand the reach of the already popular record.
“The original song was so big at the time, and then Tunde had just reached out to me, shout outs to him, and he was like, ‘Oh, this song is big right now, we need to take it to the next level, what would you want to have on it?’” the singer said.
According to Spyro, he was given a list of about five artistes to pick from.
“He gave me a list of about five artists at the time,” he said.
He noted that the list included some of the biggest names in Afrobeats.
“I remember that Olamide was on the list, that Asake was there, and very big names,” he added.
After thinking about the options, Spyro said he chose Tiwa Savage.
“So I just told him to give me a bit time to pre-run it and come back to him,” he said. “And I came back to him… I told him I wanted Tiwa Savage.”
Spyro praised Tiwa Savage for her work on the track and described her as professional and supportive throughout the process.
“She heard the song, she loved it, and she didn’t even stress us at all,” he said.
“Very fantastic personality, very sweet.”
According to him, the recording process was smooth once she agreed to join the project.
“She recorded it and sent it back, we fixed the date for the video shoot, boom, and that was it,” Spyro added.
The remix, released in March 2023, became one of the most successful versions of the song. It climbed high on the charts and helped ‘Who Is Your Guy’ reach new audiences across Nigeria and beyond, becoming one of Spyro’s biggest hits.
The remix later won Best Collaboration at the 2023 Headies Awards, further highlighting its impact on the music industry.
Spyro first released ‘Who Is Your Guy’ in November 2022, but the remix helped push the song even further, making it a widely played track on radio and streaming platforms across Nigeria.
