Why I ban female artistes I sign from getting pregnant – Ubi Franklin

Talent manager Ubi Franklin has revealed that he includes a clause in his contract that prevents female artistes from getting pregnant during the period of their agreement.

The Triple MG boss made this known while speaking on the Culture Custodian podcast, saying the move is to avoid career disruptions and protect his investment.

“If I’m signing a female artiste, I always put it in a contract that for the duration of the contract, you will not get pregnant,” he said.

Ubi, who is known for managing artistes like Tekno and Iyanya, explained that building a female artiste’s career requires significant financial commitment and a lot of patience.

“Just imagine that you have an artist who you are investing in as a woman and she gets pregnant… that’s over. It will take a lot for the artist to come back,” he said.

He continued: “I’m not saying they cannot have children, but the thing is, while you have it, build a strong career.”

The 38-year-old said it now takes between N150 million to N300 million to break an artiste in Nigeria, with no guarantee of returns.

“Right now, to break an artist, with 150 million, you’ve not even started. Sometimes you can spend N300 million on an artist and get nothing in return,” he said.

Ubi, who also serves as a special adviser on tourism to Cross River State governor, further claimed that artistes are more difficult to manage after they gain fame.

He noted that female artistes, in particular, tend to lose focus when they start getting attention.

“Once they have a hit, everything changes. For female singers, it’s promiscuity as well,” he said.

Ubi Franklin’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some defending his position as a business decision and others calling it discriminatory.
