Why divorce was never an option, Omoni Oboli on 24-year marriage

Filmmaker Omoni Oboli has opened up about her 24-year marriage to husband Nnamdi Oboli, revealing that divorce was never an option for them from the beginning.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the 47-year-old said their decision to stay married through thick and thin was made even before they tied the knot.

“Staying married for over two decades… First things first, you have to decide. It’s a decision. From day one, we decided that divorce was not an option—even before we got married,” she said.

The Being Mrs Elliott actress added that forgiveness has played a huge role in keeping their union strong.

“There’s almost nothing someone can do that you can’t forgive, if you want to forgive. We all have to realise that we’re all sinners,” she said.

Speaking further, Omoni recalled that Nnamdi proposed two weeks after they met and they got married four months later. Though she described their first year as chaotic, she said the love he showed her was what made her accept the proposal so quickly.

“I was young. Till today, I don’t know how I agreed to marry him so quickly. But I know I fell in love with the way my husband loved me.”

The filmmaker said their shared decision to never consider divorce helped them navigate the turbulent early days of marriage.

Omoni, who shares three sons with her husband, recently revealed that parts of her newly released film After a Night in July (Sequel) are inspired by her real-life love story.

“After a Night in July is so special to me because parts of it mirror my real life. My husband proposed two weeks in, and we married four months later! Our first year was turbulent, but we chose love. If you’re married or intend to marry, you’ll learn, laugh, and love,” she wrote on Instagram.

After a Night in July (Sequel), directed by Omoni, is a romance drama that explores the complexities of marriage, forgiveness and emotional growth.

Omoni and Nnamdi got married in 2000.
