Why dancing to promote movies isn’t ideal – Jide Kosoko

Actor Jide Kosoko has shared his thoughts on actors dancing to promote movies, calling it unconventional but acknowledging its effectiveness in some cases.

He spoke on the TVC Breakfast Show on Friday, ahead of the nationwide release of his new film Eleko (Oba Esugbayi).

“There is nothing bad about that style for her, but I’m telling you it is not the best,” Jide said, referring to Funke Akindele’s dance-led promotions.

“There should be a more organised way of promoting our movies. I’ve travelled a lot, and I know that people elsewhere, even actors, don’t dance about their movies. That is not the standard. But unfortunately, our environment is different.”

Jide added that while the approach may not align with global norms, it works locally. “Funke thought it was wise to do something that can bring attention, and she did it. And it’s working for her and a lot of us too. At the end of the day, what you are looking for is returns,” he said.

Eleko (Oba Esugbayi) opened in cinemas across Nigeria on Friday. The historical epic tells the story of Oba Esugbayi Eleko, a Lagos monarch who resisted British colonial authorities. The film is produced by Jide.
