Olori Temitope Ogunwusi, one of the wives of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has shared how Nollywood film Oversabi Aunty prompted her to rethink her family life.
She spoke on Thursday during an event hosted by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to honour Toyin Abraham for her directorial debut crossing the N1 billion box office mark.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures in the Nigerian film industry, including Blessing Ebigieson, national president of the Association of Movie Producers Nigeria; Patrick Lee, head of operations at Viva Cinemas; and Grace Edwin‑Okon, vice president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria.
Olori Ogunwusi described her experience watching the film. “Because of my personal experience watching the movie, a few times when I’m pretty exhausted, I take my time. I go out, maybe lodge in a hotel, watch a movie. So one night, I was at my family’s arena, we have a cinema. I was with one of my daughters. And I was like, okay, ‘what are we watching?’ And they said ‘OverSabi Aunty.’ That’s fine. And from the beginning of the movie — unlike me, I can watch a movie 10 times — this movie, from the beginning until the very end, I couldn’t stop. In fact, my daughter sat next to me. She was already in tears. But I was trying to be a strong woman. I wasn’t crying.”
She said the film was more than entertainment and served as a guide for family life. “The movie isn’t just entertainment. It gave me the time to reflect on my family, my children across the world. I started calling them, telling them, ‘I’m not too busy for you.’ Toyin Abraham has taught me that even in our busy lives, we must be intentional about our loved ones. For those who haven’t seen OverSabi Aunty, you need to see it. It is a must watch for all parents, especially religious people. You can’t watch it and remain the same. It’s a wake‑up call.”
The NFVCB formally recognised Toyin’s achievement, presenting her with an award for outstanding box office performance.
Shaibu Husseini, NFVCB executive director, said, “Today we gather to celebrate Toyin Abraham whose film OverSabi Aunty has achieved the extraordinary milestone of crossing over N1 billion at the Nigerian box office. This accomplishment is not only a personal triumph for her, but it is a testament to the global potential of Nollywood. We are presenting her with an award for outstanding box office performance as a first-time director.”
OverSabi Aunty, released in December 2025, stars Toyin Abraham alongside Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele and Enioluwa Adeoluwa. The comedy-drama follows an overzealous church usher whose efforts to help others lead to humorous and socially reflective events. Its success makes it the first Nollywood directorial debut to gross over N1 billion and places it among the top four highest-grossing Nigerian films of all time.
