Wale Thompson releases Ijebu Homage days to Ojude Oba festival

Juju musician Wale Thompson, popularly known as Mr. Lalale Friday, has released a new song titled ‘Ijebu Homage’ to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people ahead of the 2025 Ojude Oba festival.

The song dropped on Friday, with its accompanying music video premiering on YouTube on Saturday morning.

Speaking in a phone conversation with QEDNG publisher Olumide Iyanda, Wale Thompson said the song is to uphold his legacy as a cultural ambassador, using music to celebrate and preserve Yoruba traditions.

Announcing the video on social media, Wale Thompson expressed pride in his Ijebu roots, writing: “Calling all Ijebu pride! As a true son of the great Ijebu land, I’m proud to share my latest music video ‘IJÈBÚ HOMAGE’.

“This song is a celebration of our rich culture and heritage, and I invite you all to join in showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of our culture to the world!”

The video showcases the vibrant traditions of the Ijebu people, featuring scenes that highlight iconic fashion and horse riding, which are synonymous with the Ojude Oba festival. It also pays tribute to prominent figures of Ijebu origin, including Yemi Osinbajo, Mike Adenuga, Gbenga Daniel, Olu Okeowo, Wizkid, Tobi Amusan, K1 De Ultimate, Idowu Phillips (Iya Rainbow), Adewale Ayuba, Olamide, and DJ Jimmy Jatt.

Wale Thompson extends his homage to Ijebu monarchs, including the Awujale of Ijebuland, the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, the Ebumawe of Ago Iwoye, and the Akarigbo of Remo.

‘Ijebu Homage’ arrives just a week before the 2025 Ojude Oba festival, scheduled to hold in Ijebu-Ode on Sunday, June 8. The festival is a celebration of the Ijebu people’s culture, history, and unity, drawing participants and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond.
