Afrobeats singer and songwriter Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has shared that her song ‘Beggie Beggie’ was inspired by a random moment she experienced during a public bus ride home.

Speaking on the Creatorium Podcast, the Mavin Records artiste said she wrote the song after hearing a woman describe a passenger who was begging for money as “beggie beggie”.

She explained that her approach to songwriting has changed over time and no longer depends mainly on emotions.

According to her, she now starts by trying out ideas, whether through chords, sounds, sampling or creating something new.

She said,“It depends on what I am going for. Lately, for me, creating just starts with trying. Not emotion; just trying, then we see where it takes us. It may start with chords or sounds, or a specific sound I want to sample. Sometimes, I just want to do something fun or make something that sounds different”.

The singer also spoke about the demands of a music career, saying success requires passion, discipline and consistency, beyond the glamour seen by the public.

“You have to have a certain type of love and passion for what you do to be able to do this. The glamour is the glamour, but behind the scenes, it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of preparation. It’s a lot of not so amazing days. Sometimes, after rehearsing for two weeks, one sound can ruin the whole performance on stage,” Ayra said.

‘Beggie Beggie’ appears on her debut album 19 and Dangerous, released in 2021 under Mavin Records. The track featured singer CKay and was part of the project that helped establish Ayra Starr as one of the fast rising voices in Afrobeats, alongside songs like ‘Bloody Samaritan’ and ‘Away’.
