A 23-year-old student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), identified as David Timmap, has been arrested by the Plateau State Police Command for allegedly killing and burying his colleague, 22-year-old Peter Mafurai, in a shallow grave inside his room at Rusau Village, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Reports circulating on social media indicated that Mafurai was a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, while the suspect was said to be a 200-level student of Agricultural Science.

A Facebook user, Happy Londi, stated that the incident occurred in the students’ off-campus residence and shared a video showing the deceased’s body being placed in an ambulance.

Another Facebook user, identified as Mc Pee, posted a video in which a male student narrated that Mafurai was attacked with a machete after pleading for his life.

According to the witness, “Nanpon already cut Peter on his jaw while he was begging for his life. When we intervened, he threatened to machete anyone who came close. Peter tried to escape but fell, and Nanpon caught up with him and continued hacking him.”

A security and counter-insurgency expert, who posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter), said the suspect was arrested after the police received a distress call around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The Divisional Police Officer of the Laranto Division reportedly led a team to the scene, where Timmap was apprehended.

The post added that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect buried the victim in a shallow grave he dug inside his room.

The remains were exhumed and taken to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The University of Jos has also not issued a statement regarding the incident.

The case is under investigation to determine the motive behind the killing.
