United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has hosted an edition of its quarterly Business Series with the theme “Gen.W: The Evolved Woman.”

The session took place at UBA House in Marina, Lagos and was streamed to participants online.

The event was part of activities for International Women’s Month and focused on the role of women in leadership, business and innovation.

UBA’s group head of customer experience Michelle Nwoga gave the opening remarks. She said the evolved woman takes charge, volunteers and makes her voice heard.

The event was moderated by media personality and actor Tobi Bakre.

“When I think about the evolved woman, I do not see a checklist or finish point,” he said.

“In my opinion, it is a woman who is grounded in her self-worth and gives room for other women to be grounded in theirs.”

Panelists at the event included founder of ORÍKÌ Group Joycee Awosika, media personality and digital entrepreneur Tomike Adeoye, founder of Fine-Funky Olufunke Davies and broadcaster Ayo Mario-Ese.

Mrs Awosika said the evolved woman understands who she is and creates opportunities.

“That woman does not need to ask to sit at the table, she is creating her own table and adding value,” she said.

“As your company grows, you must grow and review areas where you can become a better leader.”

Mrs Adeoye said the question of what a woman brings to the table is no longer relevant.

“She is more vocal about her struggles, sets standards and is not ready to give up on her dreams,” she said.

Mrs Mario-Ese said many women do not speak about their achievements and urged them to tell their stories.

“A lot of women are doing work and are sometimes afraid to show what they are doing,” she said.

“You have to find what you are comfortable doing, create your offering and be open to collaboration.”

Davies said her focus is on creating designs that are affordable.

“It is important to do your research, streamline and think about relatability,” she said. “Start where you are because it is a progression.”

UBA’s group head of brand, marketing and corporate communications Alero Ladipo also spoke at the event.

She said women should support one another and share their stories.

Mrs Ladipo also spoke about the Gen W platform created by the bank. According to her, the platform connects women who are building brands, creating businesses and growing careers.

She said the platform provides access to resources, products and loans and is open to all women without the need for a UBA account.
