Tunji Disu becomes IGP as Tinubu finally removes Egbetokun

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

President Bola Tinubu has replaced Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun with Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Tunji Disu.

A source in the presidency told Premium Times that IGP Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Preparations for a formal handover ceremony from Egbetokun to AIG Disu are underway, according to the source.

Egbetokun became the 22nd IGP on 19 June 2023, with his appointment confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on 31 October 2023.

He was scheduled to retire on 4 September 2024 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, but a 2024 amendment to the Police Act allowed him to serve a fixed four-year term, extending his tenure until 31 October 2027 unless removed by the president.

During his time in office, Egbetokun faced complaints from the public, including issues related to human rights, though the presidency had previously maintained that his tenure was legal under the amended law.

The presidency has yet to issue an official statement.
