Actress Toyin Abraham has announced plans to move her Alakada franchise to YouTube with a Gen Z-themed edition.

She shared the update on Instagram on Sunday, writing, “Alakada Genz the beginning of a new era💃💃💃 Coming soon ✌️✌️”

The new project marks a shift for the comedy franchise, which has mostly been released in cinemas over the years. It will now be developed for a digital audience on YouTube.

The Alakada story follows Yetunde, a young woman from a modest background who often pretends to be wealthy in order to fit into high society. The franchise has remained popular for its humour and its focus on social class and identity.

The first Alakada film was released in 2009 and introduced the character to audiences. It was followed by Alakada 2 in 2013, Alakada Reloaded in 2017 and Fate of Alakada: The Party Planner in 2020.

The most recent cinema instalment, Alakada: Bad and Boujee, premiered in Lagos in December 2024 before its nationwide cinema release on December 20. The film continued the character’s story in a more modern setting and recorded strong box office performance during its run.
