President Bola Tinubu met with the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Friday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), held a closed-door meeting with the President.

Also present at the meeting were the speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen and the national security adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Although details of the discussion were not made public, the meeting took place days after President Tinubu met with the Archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, in a similar engagement aimed at promoting religious harmony.

The Sultan later joined the President for the Juma’at prayer at the State House Mosque, where the Imam, Abdulwaheed Abubakar, urged Nigerians to support the government’s efforts toward peace and security.

He said peace was necessary for both individual growth and national development.

The meeting took place amid ongoing debate over claims of religious persecution and recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused the Nigerian government of complicity in attacks on Christians.
