President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Falcons after their thrilling 3–2 victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The win, secured on Saturday night at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, gave Nigeria a record 10th continental title.

Morocco took an early lead, scoring twice in the first half to leave Nigeria trailing 2–0 at halftime. But the Super Falcons mounted a stunning comeback.

Esther Okoronkwo began the fightback with a calm penalty after a handball was spotted through VAR. She later assisted Folashade Ijamulusi to level the score. In the 88th minute, she set up Joe Echegini to seal the dramatic win.

President Tinubu praised the team’s resilience and spirit according to a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” the president said.

“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you,” he added.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie won Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while head coach Justin Madugu received the Coach of the Tournament award.

The Super Falcons have now won all 10 WAFCON finals they have played.
