President Bola Tinubu has praised the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Gabriel Igbinedion, for his contributions to Nigeria’s development, describing him as a symbol of resilience, patriotism and visionary leadership.

President Tinubu made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday during the public presentation of The Chronicles of a Legend, a biography that documents the life and achievements of the business mogul and philanthropist.

He was represented at the event by the secretary to the government of the federation, George Akume.

“Chief Igbinedion is a titan in business, a cultural icon, a patriarch, and above all, a living legend,” Tinubu said.

“His life story is one of impact, across aviation, education, health, and the preservation of our cultural values.”

The president noted that Igbinedion’s ventures, including the establishment of Okada Air, Igbinedion University and several philanthropic initiatives, have made lasting contributions to nation building.

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, also spoke at the event.

He called for greater national recognition of private individuals whose work has supported economic growth and reduced poverty.

“If we truly celebrated our real heroes, this event would have been even bigger,” Obi said, pledging a 10-year endowment in honour of Igbinedion’s legacy.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki highlighted Igbinedion’s early investments in critical sectors, noting his foresight in launching an airline, bank and university decades ago.

“His boldness in enterprise and kindness in character define his legacy,” Saraki said.

“He served everyone regardless of status.”

The event brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, business figures and members of the academic community, all paying tribute to the 89-year-old elder statesman.

Igbinedion, who was visibly moved by the outpouring of accolades, expressed appreciation to all present and reaffirmed his commitment to service through business and community initiatives.
