Tinubu extends customs boss Adeniyi’s tenure by one year

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi.

General Adeniyi’s current term, which was originally scheduled to end on August 31, will now run through to 2026.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday, by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the extension is aimed at allowing Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives central to the Tinubu administration’s economic agenda.

These include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

President Tinubu was said to have acknowledged Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extension will further strengthen Customs’ capacity in areas of trade facilitation, revenue generation and border security.

Adeniyi was appointed in June 2023 and has since led the Customs Service through significant policy shifts, including enhanced digitalisation efforts and improved border enforcement.

His leadership has also seen renewed focus on anti-smuggling operations and the streamlining of port processes.
