Tinubu congratulates Nigerian students for winning global English, debate awards in UK

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated three Nigerian students, Nafisa Aminu, Rukayya Fema and Hadiza Kalli, for their outstanding performance at the 2025 TeenEagle Global competition held in London, United Kingdom.

In a statement signed by the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, the president said the students emerged world champions in English language communication skills and debate.

Seventeen-year-old Nafisa was named the overall best in English language skills, while 15-year-old Rukayya was crowned the overall best in debate. Hadiza received the outstanding talent award (gold medal).

President Tinubu described the students as exceptional young Nigerians and commended them for making the country proud.

The president also praised the institutions of learning that produced the winners, adding that their accomplishments are a testament to the quality and potential of Nigeria’s education system.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to education, stating that it is a critical element for national development.

“Education is a critical element for national development; hence, his administration’s significant investment in the sector and the removal of financial barriers for indigent Nigerians seeking higher education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND),” the statement read.

Tinubu encouraged the students to remain focused on their academic journey and wished them continued success.

The winners, who are students of Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) in Yobe State, participated in the global competition at the University of Surrey from July 27 to August 3.

They were among over 900 finalists from 69 countries, selected after online qualifiers involving more than 20,000 students worldwide.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has also congratulated the girls and said a grand reception would be held in their honour. The students are beneficiaries of the state’s scholarship scheme.

In a separate gesture, development advocate KashimTumsah pledged N500,000 and a brand new laptop to each of the winners.

The girls’ victory has drawn praise from several Nigerians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described it as “a powerful testament to the limitless potential of the Nigerian girl-child when provided with quality education and a supportive environment.”
