Singers Teni, Flavour, Timi Dakolo and Fido were among the artistes who performed at the presidential dinner held in honour of the Super Falcons after their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The dinner took place on Monday night at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, shortly after the team returned from Morocco, where they defeated the hosts in a penalty shootout to clinch their 10th WAFCON title.
Teni thrilled the audience with her energetic performance. A video posted online showed the ‘Billionaire’ singer dancing and singing with members of the team.
Flavour also lit up the stage with his highlife hits, while Timi Dakolo and Fido added a soulful touch to the celebration.
Minister of arts, culture, tourism and creative economy Hannatu Musawa, minister of state for finance Doris Uzoka-Anite, football analyst Kelechi Anyikude, Festus Keyamo and Seyi Law were among those present at the event.
Social media users praised the government for celebrating the Falcons in grand style, sharing clips of the performances and photos from the dinner.
The players were rewarded with national honours and financial gifts.
Each member of the squad received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja and the naira equivalent of $100,000. The technical crew were awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and $50,000 each.
Earlier that day, the Falcons embarked on a victory parade across major parts of Abuja before heading to the State House for the dinner.
President Bola Tinubu, who hosted the team, said he watched their final match nervously.
“I was apprehensive. I couldn’t eat. Even my wife left my dinner in the kitchen,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
The victory marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title and first since 2018, further cementing the Super Falcons’ status as the most successful team in African women’s football.
