Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has become the first African female artist to record seven entries on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her latest entry, ‘What You Need’, debuted at number 93, bringing her total to seven entries on the weekly chart compiled in the United States. Tems’ Hot 100 appearances began in 2021 with her feature on ‘Essence’ by Wizkid, and include her part on ‘Wait For U’ with Future and Drake, which debuted at number one.
With seven entries, Tems now ties Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether for the most Billboard Hot 100 entries by African artistes.
Tems has gained global prominence through collaborations with major artistes and her own solo work. She was the first Nigerian artiste to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and has earned two Grammy Awards. She has also set streaming milestones, becoming the first African female artiste to surpass one billion streams on Spotify with ‘Wait For U’ and receiving a plaque in recognition of that achievement.
