Friends and family of singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, were overwhelmed with tears as he was laid to rest on Friday at his father’s compound in Ayetoro, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Videos from the burial surfaced online showing mourners gathered as the late singer’s remains arrived at the family compound in a white funeral hearse. Relatives, neighbours and friends were seen paying their last respects during the ceremony.
Another clip from the burial showed Destiny Boy being interred according to Islamic rites, with clerics present as family members watched quietly.
Earlier, the family announced his death in a statement which read:
“With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the family of Adeshina announces the passing of their beloved son, brother, and father, Mr. Afeez Adeshina Ayinde, popularly known as Destiny Boy.”
Destiny Boy died earlier this month at the age of 22. His death sparked widespread reactions online, with videos and voice notes linked to his final days circulating on social media.
The decision to bury him at his father’s compound also generated discussion online, with some social media users questioning why he was not buried in a public cemetery.
There were also reports of tension during the funeral after some relatives accused the singer’s mother of contributing to the illness that led to his death, an allegation that further stirred public reactions.
Following his death, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the case had been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department. Police said one suspect had been arrested as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continued.
