Taye Currency’s performance at Olubadan coronation draws mixed reactions

Fuji music star Taye Currency has stirred mixed reactions following his performance at the coronation of former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The ceremony, held on Friday at the iconic Mapo Hall, drew a host of prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Traditional rulers such as the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, Oluwo of Iwo, Soun of Ogbomoso, and the Alaafin of Oyo were also present, alongside ex-governors, senators, and political leaders.

Governor Makinde officially presented the staff of office, marking the start of his reign. A rotating statue of Oba Ladoja, in full royal regalia, was unveiled to admiration from attendees and well-wishers alike.

Taye Currency delivered a performance that combined contemporary Fuji rhythms with traditional Yoruba melodies, earning praise and sparking online conversations that propelled him to the top trends on X (formerly Twitter).

While some online users raised concerns over certain lyrics during his performance, others suggested that Fuji artists like Saheed Osupa and KWAM 1 might have been more suitable choices for the occasion. Many, however, celebrated the fusion of traditional culture and modern music, emphasizing its role in contemporary royal events.

The coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja underscores the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in Nigeria, blending political history, culture, and music in a celebration that Ibadan will remember for years to come.
