Nigeria’s Super Falcons have arrived in Abuja following their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title win in Morocco.
The team touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday, greeted with jubilation and national pride.
The players and officials, who emerged champions after a dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco on Saturday night, were received with fanfare ahead of a planned victory parade across major districts of the Federal Capital Territory.
The celebratory parade is expected to wind through Airport Road, Berger Junction, Mattapan and West Market, giving fans in the city an opportunity to honour the team’s achievement.
In recognition of their feat, President Bola Tinubu will host the Falcons at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The president had earlier expressed his eagerness to receive the trophy during a video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and other players shortly after the final whistle in Rabat.
“I look forward to receiving the trophy in Abuja,” Tinubu said during the call.
“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy. You will be celebrated.”
The president also commended Ajibade, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament and praised Esther Okoronkwo, whose second-half penalty marked the turning point in Nigeria’s comeback victory.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ajibade thanked the president for his support, particularly for the prompt approval of their allowances.
“Thank you, Mr President, for everything you have done for us, especially for approving our payments,” she said.
“We are very grateful, and we look forward to presenting the trophy to you in Abuja.”
Nigeria’s win in Morocco extended their dominance in African women’s football, securing their 10th WAFCON crown and reinforcing their legacy as the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
