Actress Biodun Okeowo has appealed to Nigerians to forgive her colleague Aremu Afolayan following backlash over his comments about President Bola Tinubu.
Aremu had come under criticism after a viral video showed him praising Tinubu while suggesting that insecurity was not a major issue in the country. The remarks angered many Nigerians, who accused him of ignoring the realities of hardship and insecurity.
The actor later apologised in a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, saying his comments were misunderstood. He admitted that the situation in Nigeria is serious and that insecurity has reached an alarming level, expressing regret for his earlier statement.
Reacting, Biodun urged the public to accept his apology, describing him as remorseful.
She said, “Aremu is sincerely sorry.
Initially, when I saw his apology video, I wanted to laugh because he’s naturally fun, but by the end, I saw a man who was truly remorseful and sober.
“He understands that what he said did not sit well with many of us, and he takes responsibility. Yoruba ni ti elese bati mo ese e ni ese kii pe lori ikunle, Ẹ̀dákùn Ẹ̀dáríjì!
“According to him, there was no intention to hurt Nigerians, but he acknowledges and apologises that it came across that way.
“He has reflected deeply and recognises the weight of his words. Please let’s forgive and stop the curses! Mofi Ikunle abiyamo Bewa
“He is truly sorry”.
Aremu’s apology comes amid wider public concern over insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, with celebrities often facing criticism when their comments appear to downplay citizens’ experiences.
