Senator representing Kogi Central Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has condemned the arrest and alleged detention of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the senator called for the immediate and unconditional release of the students, stating that peaceful protest is a constitutional right.

“Dialogue, not detention, is the pathway to peace and progress,” she said.

“Our youths must not be criminalised for raising concerns about issues affecting their welfare and future.”

Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan criticised the response of Edo State authorities, urging them to focus on addressing insecurity, including kidnappings and violent crimes, rather than arresting students.

“The government must prioritise citizens’ safety rather than suppressing young voices,” she said.

“Arresting students deepens public mistrust and widens the gap between the government and the governed.”

The senator said peaceful protest and civic engagement should not be treated as crimes in a democratic society, adding that such actions are mechanisms for accountability.

She reaffirmed her support for the detained students and their families, stating that her position aligns with her advocacy for justice, democratic values and youth participation.

According to reports, the 52 students were among several individuals arrested following a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, over insecurity.

The protest later turned violent.

The students were arraigned in Benin City on Monday.
