Live music ensemble, Shuga Band, has released a medley of classic tunes for Valentine 2026, continuing the work of its late founder, Akiin Shuga.
The medley, which blends Nigerian and foreign classics, is the band’s first music release since Shuga’s death and went live on all digital streaming platforms on February 1.
The release is part of the band’s effort to preserve Shuga’s vision. A board of trustees has been formed to guide the group’s next phase and provide structure for its post-founder journey.
Shuga Band has remained active since Shuga’s death, taking bookings across styles including classical, contemporary, gospel, and African traditional music. The band has also strengthened its visibility through live performances at high-profile events.
At a recent Christmas live edition of ARISE TV’s This Morning, media executive Nduka Obaigbena pledged continued support for the band, promising future engagements at his organisation’s events.
Speaking on the legacy and future of the band, business manager Jerry Odeh said,
“Our late founder, Akiin Shuga ran so that we could fly. He didn’t just build a band structure but also established a culture of excellence woven into the very fabric of the Shuga Band DNA. We will continue his legacy and continue to make him proud one gig at a time. With the support of a board comprising distinguished persons, we now have an extra backbone layer to navigate our post-founder phase.”
Akiin Shuga, born Akinloye Tofowomo, founded Shuga Band in 1998 and died on October 30, 2025, at 50. He was also known for his advocacy for people living with disabilities through the Shuga Limb Foundation and for building Shuga Band into one of Nigeria’s most sought-after live ensembles.
