Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to 80th UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 23, in New York, United States.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the ministry of foreign affairs, Shettima will be joined by the minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, alongside other ministers and senior government officials.

The Vice President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on September 24.

He will also attend a high-level event on climate for heads of state and government convened by the UN secretary general, where Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.

Shettima will participate in a roundtable on adequate and affordable housing hosted by the President of Kenya, bilateral meetings and other international engagements.

Nigeria’s delegation will also take part in several high-level side events, including the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, a roundtable on energy, oil and gas and security in the Gulf of Guinea and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium hosted by the African Peer Review Mechanism.

The ministry of foreign affairs explained that Nigeria’s participation will focus on priorities such as economic growth, international peace and security, climate change, human rights, humanitarian assistance, justice and international law, disarmament and cooperation against terrorism, drug trafficking and crime prevention.

After the UNGA session, Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for a meeting with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.

The 80th session of the General Assembly will mark the UN’s 80th anniversary, with the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
