Former Deputy Governor Sarah Sosan of Lagos State on Tuesday distributed food items to 500 residents of Ojo Local Government Area to mark her 70th birthday.
Speaking before the empowerment programme, Mrs Sosan said she decided to support residents because she had been blessed and felt the need to give back.
“I think I should give a token of love to them and not just celebrate with the people of my class during my birthday.
“That’s the essence of my coming home to do this.
“Today, we are empowering our underserved people, 500 residents in Ojo Local Government and its environs will benefit from the food items.
“The food items include rice, beans, noodles, garri, salt and sugar.
“The beneficiaries were selected from different houses in Ojo LGA,” she said.
Sosan said she established a foundation to support people from time to time.
“I established this foundation in other to identify with what my party, All Progressives Congress (APC) stands for which is identify with the poor and empowering them,” she said.
She also urged residents of Badagry Division who had not registered for the ongoing Permanent Voter’s Card exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission to do so.
Chairman of Ojo Local Government Muhibat Rufai-Adeyemi, prayed for Sosan’s health and protection.
Chairman of Oto Awori Local Council Development Area Kareem Abiodun commended the former deputy governor for the initiative.
Ege Olusegun, the lawmaker representing Ojo Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, also described her life as an inspiration.
Chairman of the 70th Birthday Planning Committee, Taye Oyefolu, said the empowerment programme was a way of giving back to the community.
Beneficiaries of the empowerment programme thanked Sosan for the support.
The event was attended by APC chieftains, traditional rulers, council workers and residents.
Born on February 11, 1956, Sarah Sosan hails from Irewe town in Ojo Local Government Area, Badagry Division. She studied at the Lagos State College of Education, Ijanikin, where she obtained an NCE, and later earned a degree in English Education and a master’s in Adult Education from the University of Lagos.
Between 1990 and 1999, Sosan worked as a Principal Education Officer at the Lagos State Ministry of Education before moving to the State Primary Education Board as an Assistant Board Secretary.
She obtained an Advanced Diploma in Information Technology in 2004. In 2006, she was redeployed to the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, where she headed the Department of Communication and Information Technology.
Sosan served as deputy governor of Lagos State under former Governor Babatunde Fashola from 2007 to 2011.
