Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sworn in AbdulGaniyu Obasa as the substantive chairman of Agege Local Government.
The swearing in ceremony was held on Monday at Lagos House, Ikeja.
The event also featured the inauguration of Toyin Adejimiwa as a permanent secretary.
Mr Obasa, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, had been acting as chairman before his confirmation and formal inauguration.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sanwo Olu urged the new chairman to prioritise community development and ensure that his administration aligns with the vision and policies of the state government.
The governor described local government as the tier closest to the people and said it required visible and responsive leadership.
He advised Obasa to govern inclusively, avoid divisive tendencies and focus on delivering measurable outcomes to residents, adding that discipline and performance remained key benchmarks for leadership in Lagos State.
Sanwo Olu also acknowledged the presence of retired permanent secretaries at the event, describing them as exemplary public servants whose contributions continued to inspire the state civil service.
He congratulated Adejimiwa and Obasa on behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, expressing confidence that they would justify the trust placed in them and contribute to the state’s development.
In their responses, Adejimiwa and Obasa thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to uphold the values and standards of public service in Lagos State.
Obasa’s emergence as substantive chairman followed the resignation of the former council chairman, Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to persistent health challenges.
Mr Azeez’s resignation letter was read during plenary at the Agege Council Chamber, after which councillors unanimously confirmed Obasa, who had been acting in the role.
Azeez had been on medical leave since the swearing in of the current council administration.
Obasa had earlier indicated interest in contesting the chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but was initially dropped amid opposition to his candidacy.
