Rivers sole administrator Ibas holds thanksgiving service as emergency rule nears end

Ibok-Ete Ibas Rivers State sole administrator

Rivers State sole administrator vice admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) and his wife Theresa held a thanksgiving service to mark the end of his six-month emergency rule.

The event took place on Sunday at the Ecumenical Centre, Abonnima Wharf, Port Harcourt.

Those invited included permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, heads of security and paramilitary agencies, traditional rulers, board members and captains of industry.

In March, President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State following a political crisis involving governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike.

The move suspended the governor, deputy governor and members of the House of Assembly, while Ibas was appointed sole administrator.

With four days left before the September 18 deadline for the lifting of the emergency rule, Ibas said last week that the mandate given to him by the president had been achieved.

He stated that democratic governance had been restored at the grassroots level with the successful conduct of local government elections and swearing-in of chairmen and council members.

On Friday, Ibok-Ete Ibas inaugurated a new Rivers State Pensions Board.

He said the step was aimed at addressing issues in the pension system, including delays in payment of retirees’ entitlements.

He charged the board to restore accountability and ensure prompt processing of benefits.
