Remi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, has been honoured with the chieftaincy title of “Ugosimba 1 of Enugu” in recognition of her contributions to women’s empowerment and social development across Nigeria.
The title, which means “Jewel of Empowerment” in Igbo, was conferred on the First Lady by traditional rulers in Enugu State during her two-day working visit to the South-East on Tuesday.
In a vibrant ceremony attended by political leaders, women’s groups, traditional leaders and members of the public, Mrs Tinubu was celebrated for her role in improving the lives of women and vulnerable groups nationwide through her Renewed Hope Initiative.
“The chieftaincy title of Ugosimba is not just symbolic, it is a recognition of action,” organisers said.
Mrs Tinubu has consistently championed women’s rights through her Renewed Hope Initiative, which supports women-owned businesses, girls’ education and provides healthcare and social support to the less privileged.
During her visit, she distributed professional kits to midwives across the South-East as part of her empowerment drive.
Speaking on Monday, she called for national unity beyond party lines, noting that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength, not division.
“Nigeria is a beautiful country and no one should hinder anyone from visiting any part of the country to experience this. We pray our security will improve and Nigeria should get to that place of safety,” she said.
She also urged traditional rulers to support her advocacy campaigns against cervical cancer, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and female genital mutilation, describing them as “the eyes and ears of government at the grassroots.”
“Irrespective of party affiliation, we have to grow this nation,” she added.
