Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Mohammed Gumel as a Deputy Inspector General of Police and the promotion of more than 760 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the commission, Torty Kalu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.
Mr Kalu said the approvals followed written examinations and oral interviews presided over by the chairman of the PSC, Hashimu Argungu.
He said Gumel was, until his appointment, an assistant inspector general of police in charge of the Community Policing Project, Research and Planning.
“On the promotion list is Mohammed Gumel, Assistant Inspector General of Police, who was elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
“Until his promotion, Gumel served as the AIG in charge of the Community Policing Project (CPP), Research and Planning Department at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja,” the commission said.
Kalu said seven commissioners of police were promoted to the rank of assistant inspectors general of police.
They are Ihebom Chukwuma, Maxwell Olatokunbo, Abaniwonda Olufemi, Alonyenu Idu, Lawal Ayodeji, Agene Emmanuel and Vungmoh Kwaimo.
He added that 13 deputy commissioners of police were elevated to the rank of commissioners of police.
They are Babalola Johnson, Ali Fage, Cyril Obiozo, Adepegba Adetoye, Tabitha Bako, Ofem Arikpo, Edwin Ogbeghagha, Audu Bosso, Samuel Gimba, Alhaji Danladi, Richard Gara, Lasisi Titilola and John Obiuagbaka.
The PSC spokesman said the commission also approved the promotion of 30 assistant commissioners of police to the rank of deputy commissioners of police.
He said 51 chief superintendents of police were promoted to assistant commissioners of police, while 542 superintendents of police were elevated to the rank of chief superintendent of police.
According to Kalu, 119 deputy superintendents of police were promoted to superintendent of police, while 12 assistant superintendents of police were promoted to deputy superintendent of police.
He said the promotion exercise was concluded on Wednesday, December 17, at the commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
Speaking at the end of the exercise, Argungu congratulated the newly promoted officers and reminded them that promotion comes with higher expectations.
He urged them to rededicate themselves to effective policing, protection of lives and property and the maintenance of law and order.
