Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Gbenga Hashim has resigned his membership of the party, citing internal divisions and failed reconciliation efforts.
He announced his resignation in a letter dated April 4, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
He said the decision takes immediate effect.
In the letter, Mr Hashim, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, said the party had been facing internal crisis for over a year, leading to factions within its structure.
He said the situation had affected unity and performance as an opposition party.
He added that efforts by him and other stakeholders to resolve the divisions did not succeed.
“I cannot, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values,” he said.
Hashim said remaining in the party would not align with his views, given the ongoing divisions and internal disagreements.
He also raised concerns about the country’s security and economic situation, citing loss of lives and hardship across the country.
He said his decision was influenced by the need to act in line with his convictions.
Gbenga Hashim said he would now work with others to support efforts aimed at preventing a one-party system and to promote what he described as a political direction focused on security, justice and economic development.
He also described the PDP as a party facing internal challenges that had affected its structure and direction, adding that repeated reconciliation efforts had not resolved the disputes within the party.
