The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, following the acceptance of his letter by President Bola Tinubu.
A statement issued on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, said President Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation, which cited pressing family considerations.
The statement said Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country. He acknowledged his dedication and commitment during his tenure.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Following his resignation, the president approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as acting inspector general of police with immediate effect.
According to the statement, the appointment was made in view of current security challenges and in line with existing laws and legal guidance.
The president said he is confident that Disu’s experience and leadership will provide direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this time.
In line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive inspector general of police. His name will then be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
The presidency said the administration remains committed to strengthening national security and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force is equipped to carry out its constitutional duties.
