Lagos State Police Command has ordered a forensic probe into the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye.
A special police unit from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, was deployed on Saturday to his Victoria Garden City (VGC), Ajah residence to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The residence was cordoned off as homicide detectives collected physical evidence and biological samples.
Family members and domestic aides were seen recounting their last moments with the deceased.
His son, Samuel Akingboye, told Channels Television that the family demanded clarity on his father’s passing.
“I saw him the day before, so it’s very, very shocking just to see this happen. That’s why I opened the case to know how he died, because I wasn’t getting any explanation,” he said.
His daughter, Michaella Akingboye, also urged the public to disregard unverified reports.
“I believe that the police is currently carrying out an investigation, which I believe they’ll carry out diligently. The truth will surely come to light. The whole family stands behind the police,” she said.
Speaking on the matter, commissioner of police, Olorundare Jimoh, said, “We are not going to leave any stone unturned to ensure that we get to the roots of the cause of his death. And where there’s any reasonable suspicion that some people are involved, we ensure that such figures are apprehended.”
On Sunday, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the probe in a post on its official X handle, stating, “CP Olohundare Jimoh orders forensic probe into death of Mr. Bamidele Akingboye. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to discreetly investigate the death of Mr. Bamidele Akingboye.”
The results of the autopsy are being awaited, while some occupants of the house have been invited for questioning.
Mr Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, died on Wednesday, September 3, at his VGC residence.
He was the chief executive officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems and president of WeAfrica Group.
He held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.
He is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren and siblings.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family.
