Police deny report of assassination attempt on naval officer Yerima

Federal Capital Territory Police Command has denied reports that a Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, survived an assassination attempt in Abuja.

The denial followed online reports claiming that Lt. Yerima was trailed by unidentified men in two unmarked Hilux vans from the NIPCO filling station on the Kubwa Expressway to Gado Nasco Way around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The accounts alleged that Yerima escaped through a “strategic manoeuvre.”

The reports prompted speculation linking the incident to Yerima’s recent confrontation with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land in the Gaduwa District.

In a statement on Sunday night, FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said no such incident was reported or recorded in the territory.

“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.

“The command wishes to state that no such incident has been reported or recorded within the Federal Capital Territory.

“The public is advised to disregard this information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing panic,” the statement read.

SP Adeh urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police division.

Ahmed Yerima and Minister Wike clashed on November 11 over a plot said to belong to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd).

Viral videos showed Yerima blocking the minister’s team from accessing the site.

Wike accused the retired naval chief of illegal development and said Yerima assaulted officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority deployed to stop the work.

The exchange led to public debate, with some defending the minister’s actions and others backing the officer.

The Minister of Defence Mohammed Abubakar later said no military personnel on lawful duty would face sanctions.

“We will always protect officers on lawful duty,” he said during preparations for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
