Police Council confirms Tunji Disu Inspector-General of Police

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu

Nigeria Police Council has confirmed the appointment of Tunji Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The confirmation was made on Monday at a meeting of the council chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting was attended by governors from Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Enugu and Plateau, alongside ministers of Police Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory and Interior.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the appointment to State House correspondents, saying, “Contrary to wide belief, there will be no need for a Senate confirmation again based on the provision of the Police Act. The Inspector-General of Police will be sworn in by the president on Wednesday.”

Disu was appointed acting IGP on February 24 following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The presidency said former IGP Egbetokun stepped down due to family considerations.

Egbetokun had been appointed in June 2023 to replace Usman Baba and was confirmed by the Police Council in October 2023.

Although Disu was due to retire next month, he is now expected to serve a four-year term unless he resigns or is removed from office.

Before his appointment, Disu served as assistant inspector-general of police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

He joined the police in 1992 and has held several positions, including commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, head of the Intelligence Response Team, commissioner of police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory and assistant inspector-general in charge of the Special Protection Unit.

Tunji Disu holds a degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in public administration, criminology and security and legal psychology.
