Social media commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja following his public criticism of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank).

The arrest, which occurred on Friday in Abuja, was confirmed by his legal representative, Deji Adeyanju.

According to Deji, the arrest came shortly after VDM made a viral post calling out GTBank for allegedly deducting money from his mother’s account without authorisation.

“A team of policemen arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone,” Adeyanju disclosed.

VeryDarkMan had taken to his social media platforms on Thursday to express his frustrations over what he described as repeated, unexplained loan repayment deductions from his mother’s GTBank account.

On Friday, he shared a video on Instagram, revealing that they had visited a GTBank branch in Abuja to demand an explanation and obtain a copy of her bank statement.

“Myself and my mom just arrived at GTBank to get an explanation for the constant debit from her account by GTBank in the name of loan repayments that she never took. In this year alone, see the amount of times she has been debited with different amounts.

“We have requested her bank statements so we know when the debiting started. So far, in this year alone, there have been more than seven debits on loan repayments. GTBank staff are cooperating, hopefully, we’ll know why they keep doing this,” he said.

VDM added that more than seven separate deductions had been made in the name of loan repayments in 2025 alone.

He also noted that bank staff appeared cooperative during the visit and expressed hope of getting a clear explanation.

Deji, reacting to his arrest, insists that his client’s only offence was speaking out against what appeared to be suspicious banking activity affecting his family.

“His only offence was speaking out about suspicious and repeated debits from his mother’s GTBank account for loans she never took,” Adeyanju stated.
