Delta State Police Command has arrested five persons, including a community head, over alleged sexual assault of women during a festival in Ozoro.
Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said in a post on X on Friday that the community head and organiser Omorede Sunday and four others from Oramudu quarters were arrested.
He said the Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The community head and chief organiser of the event, one Chief Omorede Sunday and four other suspects from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro have been arrested. The CP has ordered that they should be transferred to State CID with immediate effect. The CP vows that anyone involved will be arrested and brought to justice,” he said.
The arrests followed videos showing men attacking women during the event. The incident was reported to have taken place on Thursday.
Reports said women were targeted during the festival if seen outside.
Some accounts also alleged rape, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
Edafe said the police condemned the incident and called on witnesses to provide information.
The Delta State Government also reacted.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information Charles Aniagwu called for those involved to be identified and prosecuted.
He asked organisers of festivals to ensure safety of participants and prevent such incidents.
The police said investigation is ongoing and those found responsible will face the law.
