Lagos State Police Command has arraigned National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) boss, Shamsideen Oladiti, also known as Shamelon, over alleged murder and assault of a dispatch rider.

A video shared online on Tuesday showed Mr Oladiti appearing before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court 2.

Oladiti was earlier arrested on September 19 by operatives of the command and held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti-Yaba.

Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi said the 55-year-old allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island on September 18, hitting him with a helmet and fists.

The rider sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital.

The police also linked Oladiti to an incident on August 28, when he allegedly struck another man with a metallic ring during a fight.

The man later died and his body was deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

Following the man’s death, protesters stormed Oladiti’s office at Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island and set two motorcycles ablaze before police restored order.

The human rights group, World Institute for Peace, has petitioned Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, demanding further investigation into the alleged assault of the dispatch rider.

The petition was also sent to the Lagos State commissioner of police, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Lagos State attorney-general and the NURTW leadership.
