Presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Peter Obi has donated N30 million to Peter University, Achina, two months after making a similar donation to Dominican University, Ibadan.
Mr Obi recalled in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday that he donated N30 million to Dominican University in Ibadan, Oyo State, in January to support the institution’s educational programmes and growth.
He added that he visited Peter University in Achina and Onneh in Anambra State on Friday, March 6, where he donated another N30 million to support the university’s academic development.
QEDNG reports that the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate donated N50 million to Peter University in 2024.
According to Obi, education remains one of the most enduring investments any society can make because it transforms lives, strengthens communities and prepares nations for future challenges.
He said he considers it a privilege to support institutions focused on learning and service whenever the opportunity arises.
Part of his post reads: “For me, education is one of the most enduring investments that any society can make. It not only opens doors for individuals but also strengthens communities and prepares nations for the challenges of tomorrow. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I consider it a privilege to contribute, even in a modest way, to institutions devoted to learning, character formation, and service to humanity.
“My visit was not merely ceremonial; it was an affirmation of my belief that universities should remain centers where young men and women are inspired to dream beyond their immediate circumstances and see themselves as citizens of a wider world.”
Obi had announced his donation to Dominican University in an X post in January, describing his visit to the institution as an “experience that renewed my hope for Nigeria’s future.”
He said the visit included an interaction session and a question-and-answer segment with students before he made the financial contribution.
“After what I found to be a valuable interaction, including a question-and-answer session, I donated N30 million to support the university’s ongoing development. This reaffirmed my belief that education is the cornerstone of progress,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also narrated an incident during the visit when he forgot his mobile phone while leaving the university premises.
“However, a simple yet powerful incident during my visit renewed my hope for Nigeria. I had forgotten my phone, and as I was leaving the university, students found it and returned it to me,” he wrote.
According to Obi, the act reflected the values promoted by the institution.
“This act of honesty reflects what Dominican University stands for: not only as a centre of learning but also as a place where character is shaped,” he said.
Obi further stated, “I firmly believe that if we place equal emphasis on education and moral integrity, Nigeria’s greatness is within reach. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
