PENGASSAN orders cut of gas, crude oil supply to Dangote Refinery

Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has directed its members to halt the supply of gas and crude oil to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

The order was contained in a directive dated Saturday and signed by PENGASSAN general secretary Lumumba Okugbawa.

It followed the termination of over 800 workers who joined the union.

In the letter addressed to branch chairmen across the country, Mr Okugbawa said the refinery’s action was a violation of the workers’ right to association.

“As you are aware, the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has disengaged our members in reaction to the exercise of their constitutional right to be unionised,” he wrote.

Okugbawa directed the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) branch to immediately cut gas supply to the refinery.

He also ordered that all crude oil supply valves to the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility be shut and that loading operations for vessels headed there should be halted.

All branch chairmen were instructed to provide prompt updates on compliance with the directive.

PENGASSAN president Festus Osifo, who also leads the Trade Union Congress, said on Friday that the workers were removed after joining the union.

He assured that efforts would be made to recall them.

The development follows QEDNG’s earlier report that the refinery terminated the appointments of hundreds of workers.

The sack letter, signed by chief general manager of human asset management, Femi Adekunle, had cited sabotage and safety concerns as reasons for the decision.

Union leaders rejected the refinery’s explanation, describing the move as unfair labour practice.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which commenced production in 2024, has had multiple disputes with labour unions over unionisation.
