Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has arrived at Katsina airport ahead of the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness.

Mr Osinbajo who served as Buhari’s Vice President from 2015 to 2023, touched down on Tuesday afternoon as preparations intensifies for the funeral rites in the elder statesman’s hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Dressed in a white agbada and cap, Osinbajo was received at the airport by top government officials, security personnel and members of the presidential burial committee.

His presence adds to the growing list of dignitaries and statesmen paying their last respects to the former Nigerian leader.

Osinbajo had earlier mourned his former principal in a heartfelt message, describing Buhari as “a man of deep integrity, discipline and selfless service to Nigeria.”

Buhari’s body arrived in Katsina aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft earlier in the day, accompanied by a federal delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive.

The 82-year-old will be buried this afternoon (Tuesday) in Daura, following funeral prayers at the Emir’s palace.

A seven-day national mourning period has been declared and flags are flying at half-mast across Nigeria and its foreign missions.

A public holiday was also declared for Tuesday in honour of Buhari.
