Super Eagles players Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Bright Osayi-Samuel have expressed sorrow over the road crash involving British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua in Makun, Ogun State, which claimed two lives.
The crash occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his associates, Sina Ghami and Ayodele Latif, rammed into a stationary truck.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a Lagos hospital, while his two associates died at the scene.
His promoters, Matchroom, later confirmed that he was in a stable condition.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Tuesday, Osimhen described the incident as “devastating.”
“It’s devastating news. He’s been one of the huge celebrities who put Nigeria on the map. He’s done it for so many years. Something like this affected a lot of Nigerians. Condolences to the families of the deceased. It’s not a beautiful thing to lose a life,” the Galatasaray striker said.
Osayi Samuel, who plays for Birmingham City, said the Super Eagles squad was shocked by the news.
“It wasn’t great, especially as it happened back home as well. Thankfully he [Joshua] was okay. It’s tragic to hear that two of his friends died. We just hope he gets better,” he told ESPN.
Super Eagles captain and Beşiktaş JK midfielder Wilfred Ndidi said the team felt the pain deeply and hoped Joshua would recover.
“Man, it was a difficult one. When we heard he lost his family, it was really sad. I hope he can recover from that. I wish him strength, and to his family and the families of the guys who died as well,” he said.
Anthony Joshua had secured a sixth-round knockout win over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul 10 days before the crash.
