Tijani Ogunlende, son of late singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, has paid tribute to her on the first anniversary of her death.

Tijani shared a photo of the Elegant Stallion on Instagram on Wednesday with the caption, “A year ago, today. RIP Mom. July 30 2024.”

The post comes exactly one year after the music and screen legend died at the age of 72.

Onyeka Onwenu died on July 30, 2024, shortly after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Emzor Pharmaceuticals boss Stella Okoli in Lagos.

The music legend was said to have slumped while returning to her seat after her performance at the event. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island where she was confirmed dead.

The ‘One Love’ singer was buried exactly a month later on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Ebony Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi, Lagos. The burial was held privately in accordance with her wishes. One of her sons was seen placing a Bible on her casket as she was laid to rest.

Known as the Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu was one of Nigeria’s most respected entertainers, with a career that spanned music, film, journalism and public service.

She starred in movies like Conspiracy, Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart, and was also a former executive director of the National Centre for Women Development.

She is survived by two sons, including Tijani, who continues to honour her memory.
