A commercial sex worker in the Cathedral area of Akure, Ondo State has died following a dispute with a customer.
Ondo State Police Command spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade confirmed the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, in a statement on Monday.
The statement by Mr Ayanlade added that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to a statement by the brothel manager, trouble began when the sex worker reportedly became weak during an encounter and was unable to continue providing the agreed service. This led to a heated confrontation with the customer, who demanded a refund of ₦15,000.
“The customer became enraged, resulting in a heated verbal and physical confrontation,” Ayanlade said. Despite attempts by the manager and others to calm the situation, the customer left, only to return with a group of men believed to be his associates.
The group reportedly attempted to forcibly recover the money. At this point, the brothel manager reportedly called the police for help.
A police patrol team was said to have arrived to find the suspects still trying to recover the money by force, while the victim’s health deteriorated. She was rushed to the Police Hospital in Akure but was declared dead on arrival by medical personnel.
Her body has been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Three suspects were arrested at the scene, while two others are still at large. “Efforts are ongoing to apprehend two others who remain at large,” Ayanlade said.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The police have assured the public that justice will be served and have pledged to charge the suspects to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
