Okonjo-Iweala expresses shock over Buhari’s death moments after sending get-well message

Director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed shock over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, revealing that she found out he had died just moments after tweeting a get-well-soon message.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Mrs Okonjo-Iweala wrote, “Unbelievable! I did not know how ill HE President Buhari was and minutes after sending my get well wishes I have just learned he passed away. I am so very sad. May the soul of HE rest in perfect peace. My deepest condolences to the entire Buhari family and his aides and close associates.”

Earlier, she had posted a message wishing the former Nigerian leader a quick recovery, unaware of his death.

“I am just learning of HE President Buhari’s health situation. Your Excellency, we all pray for your good health and speedy recovery. I appreciate the support you gave me in my current position during your time in office. Wishing you the very best,” she wrote.

President Buhari died in London at about 4:30 pm on Sunday, after a prolonged illness, according to a statement from the presidency.

President Bola Tinubu has since ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany the former leader’s body back to Nigeria.
