Ogun govt sets up 12-man committee for late Awujale’s state burial

Awujale of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Adetona

The Ogun State Government has constituted a 12-member state burial committee to oversee the planning and coordination of official activities for the state burial of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

The revered monarch died on Sunday and was buried the following day in line with Islamic rites.

His death marked the end of an era, as Oba Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers, having ascended the throne in 1960.

According to a statement signed by the secretary to the state government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, who also serves as chairman of the committee, the group is charged with organising and coordinating every official activity to ensure a befitting burial that honours the monarch’s legacy and contributions to Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

Other members of the committee include the chief economic adviser/commissioner for finance Dapo Okubadejo, the commissioner for Local Government and chieftaincy affairs Ganiyu Hamzat, among others.

At the committee’s inaugural meeting held on Thursday, members resolved to work in close consultation with the late king’s family and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the upcoming state ceremonies reflect the honour and dignity Oba Adetona deserved.

The meeting also acknowledged the anticipated presence of President Bola Tinubu, traditional rulers from across Nigeria, dignitaries from the diplomatic corps and notable Ijebu sons and daughters from around the world.

Oba Adetona’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief from both national and international figures, many of whom have paid tribute to his visionary leadership, unwavering service to the Ijebu people and steadfast advocacy for justice, development and Yoruba cultural heritage.
