Rapper Odumodublvck had a controversial moment at the 17th Headies Awards held on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.
The 31-year-old, who won the coveted Next Rated award, was midway through his acceptance speech when organisers cut off his microphone and asked him to leave the stage due to time constraints.
However, Odumodublvck refused to leave, standing his ground alongside his mother and a group of 10 men who accompanied him to the stage.
Before the interruption, the ‘Legolas’ crooner had boldly credited his success to his Christian faith.
“Against all odds, I have pushed against so many barriers like this. A couple of years back, there were so many feelings we could not express through our music.
“The world world clap us down; ‘you can’t be this,’ or ‘you can’t speak like,’ ‘you can’t do this,’ ‘you can’t release music in this way.’
“Me standing here today is proof that all those things are fallacies. It would only have been possible through my Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, who has been there for me through thick and thin. Tonight, God has shown that God reigns,” Odumodublvck said.
After a tense moment, his microphone connection was restored, allowing him to complete his speech to loud cheers from the audience.
Among the high-profile guests at the event were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Tanzanian singer Juma Jux and his wife Priscilla who made their first Headies appearance as a married couple, Annie Idibia, Farooq Oreagba, Mohbad’s wife Wunmi Aloba and music executive Paulo Okoye.
Founded in 2006 by Ayo Animashaun, the Headies is Nigeria’s biggest music awards show, celebrating outstanding achievements in the country’s music industry.
The event, which features live performances and recognises both established and up-and-coming talents, returned to Nigeria this year after being held in Atlanta, USA, in 2022 and 2023.
