Billionaire businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has celebrated Jerry Ekuma, the street trader who went viral in January 2022 after giving money to inmates in a Black Maria vehicle.
Jerry, who had dropped out of university due to financial challenges, became a law graduate this year after Obi Cubana sponsored his return to school.
In an Instagram post on Monday, Obi Cubana recalled the choice Jerry made when support was offered in 2022.
He said, “On 19th January 2022 when the offers were placed before you, you chose education! You made the best choice, today you are a 2025 law graduate!!”
Obi Cubana noted that Jerry could have decided differently but chose a path that secured his future.
“You could have chosen to take the money and walk away to a temporal comfort and live for the moment, but you were wise to choose education!”
He added that the decision has now given Jerry both academic success and financial stability.
“Today you have both education and the money, and more ahead!!!”
Concluding his post, Obi Cubana reaffirmed his commitment to Jerry’s progress.
“Jerry MUST be successful!” he wrote.
In January 2022, Jerry Ekuma was filmed giving money to inmates being transported in a correctional service vehicle in Lagos.
The video drew wide attention, leading to Obi Cubana’s offer to sponsor his education.
